For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother; and, he that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. - Matthew 15:4
Jesus draws His text from the following passage as He is dealing with the religious leaders and selective law.
Deuteronomy 15:16 - "Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may be well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee."
I had two mothers. My biological mother and a step-mother. I was raised by my biological mother until the age of three. From the ages of 3-5 years, I lived with an aunt, and from 5 to 18 years of age, I lived with my step-mother.
My mothers were not believers during my childhood, but they were still my mothers. Both were single parents most of their lives and I grew up watching them sacrifice. They worked hard to provide, they worried, they cried. Often, they avoided relationships to make sure their children were safe and secure. They were mothers.
My mothers were not flawless, but they faced many challenges with not knowing, at times, how things would turn out or how to make ends meet. They lived, they laughed, they cried. At times, they were angry, but they always forgave an offense. They were mothers.
Time was not a commodity my mothers possessed as their own. They made sacrifices that afforded us children the opportunity to flourish. They were mothers.
Maybe, your mother or mothers are not perfect. Maybe, they have some room to grow or maybe your mother is the perfect image of the of a godly saint right out of the Bible. I honored two women until their untimely deaths and I count it a privilege to have called them both Mother.
The Hancock Church of God honors our Mothers this Sunday, May 9th. Sis. Touchton will share our Mother's Day message. We invite you to come.
